“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”– Ralph Waldo Emerson
My wife wants to change our kitchen cabinets—again. Apparently, our cabinets are “dated” and no longer “in.” She tells me this after visiting a neighbor who just upgraded to the modern look. Funny enough, she also wanted to change them eight years ago when dark wood was the trend. Both times, I negotiated a deal: instead of new cabinets, she got another dog.
We now have six dogs.
Why am I telling you this? Because marketing works the same way, but without the dogs. Trends change. One moment, it’s all about short-form video. The next, long-form storytelling is back. Yesterday, AI-generated content was the future; today, authenticity is king. The almighty “algorithm” favors one thing today and something entirely different tomorrow. If you’re constantly chasing trends, you’ll always feel like you’re behind—just like those, apparently now-hideous, kitchen cabinets.
The most successful brands don’t follow the crowd—they set their own course.
Instead of scrambling to keep up with every shiny new tactic, build a marketing strategy that’s true to your brand, speaks to your audience, and delivers real value.
Think about the brands you admire. They aren’t just doing what everyone else is doing. Can you imagine Nike trying to copy Converse or Adidas? Nike stands out because they’ve carved their own niche, developed a strong brand identity, and committed to a strategy that fits their audience. Getting Michael Jordan onboard helps too!

Consistency, not trend-chasing, is what builds trust and long-term success.
This doesn’t mean you should ignore industry shifts or new opportunities. But instead of reacting impulsively, evaluate whether a trend aligns with your goals and audience. Is it a shiny object, or is it a tool that actually enhances your message?
Don’t be another rabbit chasing the same carrot. Blaze your own trail, and you’ll find that success follows those who lead, not those who follow.
Are you ready to stop chasing and start leading?
